Where are the Spires? The Spires can be seen north of Emory's November 8 campsite, which is about 14 air miles east-northeast of Florence, Arizona on the north bank of the Gila River and just west of the site of the old mining town of Cochran. Another interesting site-the "Coke Ovens" is less than a quarter mile away from the campsite. My picture of the spires was taken from the railroad track on the south bank of the Gila River about two miles from Cochran. This area is reached by a dirt road that runs north from the Florence-Kelvin Highway. The actual campsite is considerably more difficult to reach as the roads require a 4-wheel drive vehicle. For directions and a short history of the coke ovens see the Arizona Off-Road site: http://az-offroad.com/ovens.html GPS coordinates for the campsite: N33° 6.00’ W111° 10.20’
Above is the area as shown on the "Mesa" metric quad. See also the USGS 7.5' "North Butte" topo map. Return to Emory places: |
