Kearny's Saddle Mountain Detour If you examine Emory's map it shows the trail on November 5 following fairly close to the Gila River as they left the river to avoid a difficult canyon:
Following the diary accounts and Stanley's lithograph, however, reveals that they followed Ash Creek upstream about 1 or 2 miles, followed a tributary to the south, then crossed to another drainage, probably Piper Springs Wash. Here is a map of Kearny & Emory's probable detour past Saddle Back Mountain:
