Public input has been overwhelmingly against the name change.  Here are some brief statistics:

 

Public responses to the Arizona Board on Geographic and Historic Names and other state officials from April 8 to May 12, 2003

Email and letters:       25% for name change     75% against name change

Phone responses:        14% for name change    86% against name change

Average of both:            21% for                        79% against

 

KFYI Opinion Poll April 15, 2003

Question: Would you like to see Squaw (a name some consider an ethnic slur) Peak renamed Piestewa Peak?

 

Results:    59.62%  No, it's politicizing Piestewa's sacrifice

                5.28%    Yes, it's the answer to our (political) prayers

                1.51%    A peak by ANY other name would smell as sweet

                33.58%    ALL of Arizona's heroes should be honored

 

KTAR Opinion Poll April 2003 (exact date unknown)

Question: Should Squaw Peak be renamed Piestewa Peak in honor of slain PFC Lori Piestewa?

 

Results:    12.9%        Yes

                87.1%        No
