This is a memorial to the mountain that Arizona residents have known as Squaw Peak for over 100 years. The name has now been changed to Piestewa Peak thanks to a governor who has no regard for the history of this state or the rules that were put in place to preserve it.
The name change was inevitable. A significant portion of Native Americans across the country have come to view the word "squaw" as derogatory. If Governor Napolitano and the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names had followed the rules and respected the wishes of the majority of Arizona residents, a name change could have been accomplished without all of the outrage and resentment that have resulted from their rash and inconsiderate action.
This website will provide information on the history of Squaw Peak, the story of the name change of 2003, and some facts and opinions about the word "squaw."
