Troubleshooting for General Lubrication

OIL - The manufacturer recommends about 30 weight non-detergent oil to lubricate Ryobi presses. Do not use WD-40 as it is not a lubricant. The addition of 10% or so of an additive like STP helps the oil to stay where you put it a little longer. The manufacturer recommended oiling frequency is once a week.

Many moving parts have oil holes marked with red or yellow paint. I recommend that you remove the press covers and look over the press carefully with a flashlight to find all the hidden oil points. Many other moving parts do not contain oil holes but should be oiled anyway. If it moves – oil it. There are several shafts and studs that contain oil ports in them to supply gears that run on the shafts. These ports have a small steel ball in the end that is pushed out of the way to allow oil to be pumped in. All truck rollers (cam followers) should be oiled – don’t forget the one on the impression cylinder grippers.

Two areas that are particularly vulnerable to wear from lack of lubrication are:

1. The four pivot studs on the cylinder pressure arms.

2. The bushing in the idler gear on the night latch shaft.

The delivery chains should be oiled also. Foaming motorcycle chain lube works well for this but regular oil will suffice.

GREASE - A good heavy grease should be applied once a month to these areas:

1. All gears on cylinders and elsewhere. Be sure you don’t miss the gear cluster between the impression cylinder and chain delivery gears.

2. Cam surfaces

3. Clutch bushing

4. Oscillating rollers. These are equipped with grease fittings but are often disassembled for lubrication.
