TIPS FOR PAPER FEED SETUP...

Machines this applies to: Ryobi 2800, 3200, 3200MCD; Itek 960, 975, 985

Here are some tips to help you set up your feeder for most papers:

  1. Pile height.  The sheet separator brackets are marked with a box or three lines showing the proper pile height.  For lightweight papers like NCR set the pile height to the bottom line or bottom of the box.  For 20-24 lb. paper set the height at the middle line.  For the heaviest papers, like 110 lb. index, set the height at the top line.
  2. Blower setting.  With the press idling, turn on the pump switch and adjust the blower so the top sheet just barely floats up to the sheet separators.
  3. Sucker feet.  On 24 lb. or lighter paper open all of the suction valves that are on the sheet and remove all rubber suckers.  For heavier papers, open every other valve and use rubber suckers only on the open tubes.  You should never put rubber suckers on every tube.
  4. Suction setting.  If you're feeding lightweight paper with no suckers, turn the suction all the way up.  If you're setting up a paper that requires rubber suckers, turn the suction down, put the press in feed mode, and gradually turn up the suction till it picks up a sheet, then about a half-turn more.

The above combination of every other sucker and careful suction level adjustment can dramatically improve feeding consistency and registration with heavier papers.  Here is some more helpful feeder information:

  • The standard position for the bale bar is 80mm (about 3 1/4") back from the sheet separator bracket.  This should work for most paper sizes.
  • The sheet separator adjustment is also important.  It should be set 6mm (1/4") above the bottom of the notch and it should protrude out 4-5mm (about 3/16") from the face of the bracket.  Use care when mounting to ensure that it doesn't drag on the sides of the notch.  It should be able to easily move out of the way to allow a sheet to pass and then freely snap back into position.
  • If most papers feed well for you but you have a bad time with light to medium weight glossy stocks (especially 11X17) a back blower accessory may help.  Coated stocks fit so tight in the pile that the front air blast doesn't separate them well enough causing the press to try to pick up two sheets at a time and sometimes drive the top sheet down in front of the paper pile.  This acts much like a static problem but usually is not static-caused.

If your press still doesn't feed well with these techniques, it may need the timing adjusted or worn parts replaced.
