DRIVE CLUTCH MAINTENANCE

Machines this applies to: all Ryobi and Itek duplicators.

The drive clutch ( the top pulley on the non-operator's side of the press should be serviced about once a month to maintain proper operation and to prevent that annoying squeak when the handwheel is rotated.  A properly cleaned and lubricated clutch should disengage when the motor is stopped, allowing the press to be turned more easily by hand.  You should be able to hear a "tinkle" sound as the motor comes to a stop and the clutch disengages.  Here's how to service it:

  1. Remove the drive belt from the top pulley.  Remove the 13mm bolt in the center of the pulley and slide the outer pulley housing off of the shaft.  Leave the inner housing in place on the shaft.

  2. Clean the outer pulley, weights, bushing, and inner housing with a dry rag.  Do not use solvent here as it will promote rusting of the components.

  3. Place the weights back in the outer pulley (they have numbers on one side but it doesn't matter which side is out).

  4. Apply grease inside the hole in the center of the outer pulley.  Push the bushing into the hole from the inner side so that excess grease is pushed toward the outside of the pulley.  Apply a small amount of grease to the inside of the bushing.  When you're finished there should be no grease anywhere on the weights or the inside of the pulley.  If there is grease inside wipe it off with a dry rag.  The grease that pushes through to the outside of the pulley can be left in place as it will lubricate the washer.

  5. Reinstall the pulley, 13mm bolt and drive belt.  You may need a helper to hold the handwheel while you tighten the bolt.

Here's a suggestion from MIKE PEDONE at THE COPY SHOP in Prescott:  At step 3, Mike suggests spraying the weights, pulley, and housing with WD-40.  I haven't fully tested this yet but it sounds like a good idea.
